In December 2014, Ben started a company that makes sausages which taste like burritos. This innovation was achieved simply by putting all the ingredients of a burrito into a sausage: free-range pork, whole black beans, chunks of red onion etc. Served in a tortilla with guacamole, hot sauce and sour cream, the Bangerrito was an instant hit.
Stocked in gourmet supermarkets around New Zealand, the Bangerrito even won Gold at the prestigious NZ Sausage Awards. However, acceptance into the largest grocer in NZ - originally the dream - forced Ben to sit down and really look at Bangerritos as a business. To get things up and running at the mainstream level he’d always dreamed of would require a not-insignificant amount of money. Poor returns, the result of using the best ingredients, made the investment hard to justify. Ultimately, the decision there were better uses of time and money was made and the plug was pulled in 2018.
